Nigeria sees off Kenya - 73-60 in AfroBasket
Defending champions, Nigeria handed Kenya a painful 73-60 points defeat to maintain their second spot in group-B of the 20th Africa Nations Championship for Women.
Nigeria took an early 32-15 lead in the first quarter, before stopping Kenya in their tracks to take the second quarter 11-08 . Efforts by the Kenyas to rally back in the third and fourth which it won (13-11 and 24-19) was too late to save them from defeat and an early exit from contention for the continent's sole Beijing 2008 Olympic Games slot.
Nigeria 's Olayinka Sanni led her team with 13 points, centre, Ugochukwu Oha added 12 points, and 3 block-shots just as the duo of Sefi Mojidi and Chisaokwu Ononiwu contributed 10 points each for the Africa representative at the basketball event of the 2004 Olympics.
Kenya's Caroline Achieng led the floor with 18 points and 4 assists, Brenda Odula added 13 points with Joyce Makhungu adding her name on the score sheet with 12 points and Miriam Awuor 10 points. |
